Karlsruhe Pharmacists Seek to Persuade IKK Contract Resisters

Wed 9th Jul, 2025

Recently, the supply contract for medical aids between IKK classic and the German Pharmacists' Association (DAV) expired at the end of June. As a result, pharmacies are no longer allowed to supply IKK-insured patients with medical aids under the previous terms since July 1. The IKK classic has offered individual contracts to pharmacies, but both the DAV and regional pharmacists' associations have strongly advised against signing these new agreements due to significant price reductions that they deem unsustainable for pharmacies.

Pharmacists in Baden-Württemberg are urging their clients to demand that IKK classic reinstate fair conditions for the local pharmaceutical supply of medical aids. They believe that only through collective action can they ensure the continuity of care for their patients.

However, some pharmacies in the Karlsruhe area have chosen to enter into individual contracts with IKK classic, prompting the 'Group of Karlsruhe Pharmacists' to call on their colleagues to reconsider such decisions. This group, consisting of around 50 pharmacists in the region, advocates for the interests of local pharmacies. In their communication, the group's leaders expressed their disappointment regarding the decision to join individual contracts.

They emphasize that the new remuneration structure is economically unfeasible, warning that this move could initiate a dangerous downward pricing spiral that might affect other health insurance companies as well. They encourage their colleagues to reflect on the implications of signing a contract that reduces compensation in an already struggling sector.

The authors of the letter highlight the potential consequences of such agreements, stating that accepting a deal with reduced compensation could undermine the collective demands for a fairer remuneration system. Furthermore, if more pharmacies opt for these contracts, it could embolden additional health insurers to pursue similar cost-cutting measures.

In light of the current supply situation, the group stresses the need for transparency and advocates for strong resistance to ensure meaningful changes in the healthcare landscape. They also remind their colleagues to consider the broader impact their decisions may have on collective efforts for fair remuneration.
