Mon 14th Jul, 2025

The Karl-Marx-Straße in Neukölln, Berlin, has officially reopened to traffic after an extensive 15-year construction period. While the street is now accessible, final finishing touches are expected to be completed in the coming weeks. According to the Neukölln district office, a celebratory reopening event is scheduled for September 29.

During the lengthy construction, significant upgrades were made, including the installation of new utility lines and a complete overhaul of the road itself. The project also featured expanded sidewalks and dedicated bike lanes, aiming to enhance the overall experience for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Local officials highlighted the improved quality of life resulting from these changes. The district mayor expressed enthusiasm about the new design, which encourages leisurely strolls and socializing in the area. The additional space created by the wider walkways and updated public spaces, such as the Alfred-Scholz-Platz, is anticipated to attract more visitors and bolster local businesses.

To ensure minimal disruption, construction was carried out while keeping the U-Bahn and roadways operational. Simultaneously, the BVG undertook essential renovations to the U7 subway tunnel that runs beneath the street. The entire project incurred costs of approximately EUR11 million, funded through city development grants aimed at revitalizing urban centers.

Looking ahead, planning is already underway for the next phase of construction in Neukölln. Starting in 2027, work will commence on the tunnel restoration between Weichselstraße and Hermannplatz, along with further street enhancements. Initial discussions among stakeholders are currently taking place as preparations for this next stage begin.
