Kanuka Extract May Alleviate Side Effects of Organ Transplant Medications

Recent research has uncovered a compound within the extract of the native kanuka plant that may help reduce the adverse effects associated with the medication rapamycin, which is primarily used as an immunosuppressant in kidney transplant procedures.

The findings suggest that the compound, known as nerolidol, could enhance the body's absorption of rapamycin, potentially allowing for lower dosages. This reduction in dosage may consequently decrease the risk of negative side effects, which can include anemia, high blood sugar levels, and renal complications.

High doses of rapamycin are known to carry toxic risks, making the prospect of using kanuka extract particularly significant for patient care. Although further clinical trials are necessary to confirm these findings, initial results indicate that nerolidol could play a crucial role in mitigating rapamycin's toxicity.

The kanuka plant, endemic to New Zealand, has been utilized by Maori for centuries. Recent studies have highlighted its potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, this research marks the first instance of investigating nerolidol's efficacy alongside rapamycin.

This study is part of a collaborative effort initiated in 2016 between a university and Hikurangi Bioactives, a company based in Ruatoria that specializes in developing products derived from kanuka oil. This partnership emphasizes the importance of working with Maori landowners to sustainably source raw materials, with plans to share intellectual property and profits with the community.

The involvement of Indigenous landowners in the research process is seen as a significant aspect of the collaboration. This approach contrasts with the historical development of rapamycin, which was derived from a soil compound found on Easter Island, where local communities were not included in its research and commercialization.

One of the landowners involved in the project expressed the value of participating in research that seeks to deepen the understanding of kanuka and promote sustainable industrial practices that benefit local communities.

The discovery of a new application for kanuka extract is viewed as an exciting development in the field of medical research. Stakeholders involved in the project are hopeful that continued investigation into the uses of kanuka and other native plants will lead to further advancements in health and wellness.
