Juliana Meyer Appointed as New Leader of the Green Party in Brandenburg

Juliana Meyer has been elected as the new chairperson of the Green Party in Brandenburg, following a vote at the party's state delegates conference in Fürstenwalde/Spree. Meyer secured the position with 55.5 percent of the votes, succeeding Andrea Lübcke, who vacated the role to assume a Bundestag mandate after Annalena Baerbock became President of the UN General Assembly.

Meyer, aged 38, brings experience from her involvement with the Cottbus district association of the Greens, and her previous service as a member of the city council. Her professional background includes coordinating volunteer efforts for refugees and providing anti-discrimination counseling. Meyer's priorities for the party focus on strengthening the Greens' presence in rural areas, enhancing advocacy for children, youth, and education, and supporting those whose voices are often underrepresented in political discourse. She emphasizes the importance of addressing local issues, developing solutions, and increasing the party's visibility and outreach through strong communication and active participation in public forums and social networks.

During the conference, the party highlighted positive developments in membership and diversity. Clemens Rostock, co-chair of the Brandenburg Greens, reported that membership has grown by a third since the last state election, reaching approximately 4,000 members. The average age of party members has decreased, and the proportion of women has risen to over 47 percent. Cindy Hahn from the Uckermark district association was also elected as the spokesperson for women's policy, running unopposed.

The organizational structure and financial management of the party have been reviewed and updated, according to Rostock, who noted that the party has implemented new frameworks to better support its policy work. He added that the party is committed to inclusivity, encouraging participation and input from all members as the Greens continue to shape their direction in Brandenburg.

Felix Banaszak, national chairman of the German Green Party, attended the conference and addressed delegates, expressing confidence in the state association's ability to overcome challenges. He assured that the national leadership and Bundestag faction are closely monitoring developments in Brandenburg and that the federal finance council has approved a redistribution of resources to support rebuilding efforts in regions where local structures have weakened.

The election and the discussions at the conference signal a renewed focus by the Greens in Brandenburg on community engagement and policy initiatives tailored to the needs of both urban and rural residents. The party aims to build on its recent growth, foster greater gender equality, and increase its impact across the state through active and inclusive leadership.
