José Barcala Appointed as New Head Coach for FC Bayern Women

Thu 15th May, 2025

FC Bayern Munich has officially announced the appointment of José Barcala as the new head coach for its women's team, effective July 1. Barcala, a 43-year-old Spanish coach, succeeds Alexander Straus, who is departing for a position with Angel City FC in the United States.

Having previously managed various clubs across Spain, Australia, and France, as well as serving as an assistant coach for the Scottish women's national team, Barcala brings a wealth of experience to the role. His most recent achievement was winning the Swiss league title and cup double with Servette Geneva last year.

Bianca Rech, the women's football director at Bayern, expressed confidence in Barcala's compatibility with the club, stating that he possesses the necessary personal and professional qualities to fit seamlessly into the team.

Barcala takes over a team that has recently achieved significant success, including a national league title and a strong showing in various competitions. Under Straus's leadership, Bayern transformed from challengers to the leading force in German women's football. The club aims to maintain its domestic dominance while enhancing its international competitiveness in the UEFA Champions League.

Technical director Francisco De Sá Fardilha highlighted that Barcala will introduce a modern training methodology that mirrors the approach of his predecessor, Straus. Both coaches value possession-based football and control on the pitch. Barcala outlined his goal to implement a dominant style of play, regardless of the opponent, and emphasized the importance of high pressing and quick transitions.

In light of recent player departures, Barcala's task will be to solidify the squad while also nurturing emerging talent. While some notable players have left, including Linda Sembrant, the club does not anticipate a significant overhaul of the roster, allowing Barcala to focus on integrating new strategies and ideas into the existing framework.

The upcoming season presents both challenges and opportunities for Barcala as he embarks on this new chapter with FC Bayern, aiming not only to uphold the club's prestigious legacy but also to push for greater success on the European stage.
