Jens Spahn Faces Scrutiny Over Pandemic Response on 'Markus Lanz'

Thu 19th Jun, 2025

The former Federal Minister of Health, Jens Spahn (CDU), found himself under intense scrutiny during a recent episode of the talk show 'Markus Lanz.' The discussion centered on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, particularly regarding mask procurement.

Spahn repeatedly urged viewers to consider the context of the early months of the pandemic, specifically March and April 2020, when the situation was unprecedented and chaotic. However, reporters pressed him, drawing attention to a previously unpublished special report by Margaretha Sudhof, which accuses Spahn of acting independently during the mask acquisition process and wasting billions in taxpayer money. The government may face claims amounting to EUR2.3 billion as a result of these actions.

Despite the serious allegations, Spahn insisted that he was unaware of the content of the report and claimed he had not been questioned by the special investigator. During the show, host Markus Lanz expressed disbelief, highlighting that Spahn, as a party leader, should have had easy access to the report. Lanz noted, "It's hard to believe that you couldn't read this report if you wanted to."

Spahn expressed his desire for the report to be made public for a comprehensive discussion on the matter, stating, "It would be easier for me if the report were available to the public, so we could discuss it in context." He emphasized that he would wait for it to be presented to the Bundestag, like any other member of parliament.

He explained that the report needs to be prepared with regard to data protection, personal rights, and legal risks, which might require certain sections to be redacted. Lanz found this reasoning puzzling, describing the situation as "absurd," referring to it as a "report about a report."

As details of the mask procurement scandal continue to emerge, including communications that reflect Spahn's controversial dealings, the pressure mounts on him to clarify his role and decisions made during the pandemic.
