In a recent appearance on a popular talk show, Jens Spahn, the newly appointed leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, made significant statements regarding his party's political direction and collaboration with the SPD. Spahn emphasized the CDU's commitment to work alongside the Social Democratic Party, asserting that they possess a majority for their legislative agenda and do not intend to make frequent amendments to the constitution.
During his discussion, Spahn highlighted the importance of stability in a politically turbulent environment. He expressed confidence in his relationship with Friedrich Merz, the party leader, and emphasized a balanced approach between loyalty and assertiveness. He conveyed a shared vision with Matthias Miersch, the SPD parliamentary leader, focusing on being stabilizing forces during uncertain times.
Spahn outlined his party's stance on collaboration, stating that they would not engage with parties that exhibit pro-Russian sentiments or have ambiguous positions on NATO and the German military. He specifically mentioned the need for clarity in addressing issues such as antisemitism and economic principles.
Regarding the Alternative for Germany (AfD), Spahn acknowledged the party's classification as far-right by the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. He stressed the seriousness of this designation but indicated that it does not automatically negate the possibility of legislative agreements with the AfD. He noted that such partnerships do not compromise the quality of the laws passed.
Spahn's agenda includes addressing critical issues such as illegal migration, economic growth, rising energy costs, and reducing bureaucracy. He underscored that the CDU/CSU has the necessary support in the Bundestag to govern effectively. He articulated that any cooperating parties must meet the CDU/CSU's conditions rather than the other way around.
In a stark warning, he addressed the ongoing challenges posed by illegal migration into Europe, particularly Germany, highlighting that the current social welfare claims from the first day of arrival are unsustainable. He cautioned that if these trends continue over the next several years, the political landscape and public sentiment may shift significantly.
