Italy's weather system casts a shadow over Austria, plunging the nation into a state of snow-related chaos. The heavy snowfall, particularly affecting southern regions, has prompted widespread concern. Municipalities like Eibiswald in Styria report deploying snow-clearing vehicles since the early morning hours. Southwest Styria has experienced numerous power outages, with trees collapsing under the weight of snow onto power lines. Energie Steiermark reports that 100 transformer stations and 3,400 households were affected on Tuesday morning.
The snow crisis grips Austria, leaving thousands of households without electricity. "A snow roller is now rolling over Austria," declares meine.at on Tuesday (April 23), accompanied by a "Warning level red!" According to ORF, Carinthia has so far been spared the feared snow chaos, but the situation remains critical. Winemakers in wine-growing regions express concern over potential damage to shoots, as reported by derstandard.at.
Italy's influence continues to hold Austria in its grip, with the Alpine nation enduring ongoing snowfall. The Austrian weather service GeoSphere Austria warns of rain and snowfall across the country. An "Orange snow warning" is in effect in Styria, the second highest alert level, while a "Yellow snow warning" is issued for Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and Carinthia - currently until Wednesday at 12 p.m. Snowfall is anticipated to reach altitudes between 900 and 400 meters. Snow hotspots include Styria, Carinthia, Tyrol, and Arlberg.
Austria experiences up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow in April, prompting ASFINAG to resume winter services after a sudden drop in temperatures following summer-like weather. ASFINAG urges drivers to equip their vehicles with winter gear, adjust their speed, and maintain safe distances, particularly on higher routes like the Arlberg Pass, which serves as a regional alternative due to the Arlberg Tunnel's closure.
The prolonged wintry weather is expected to persist until the weekend, with early temperatures ranging from minus 2 to plus 6 degrees Celsius. Daytime highs are forecasted to reach 14 to 22 degrees Celsius. Germany also anticipates changes in its weather patterns, mirroring Austria's transition from winter to a more temperate climate.
