Investigations Underway in NRW Following Latest Railway Arson Attack

Wuppertal (NRW) -- Authorities are investigating a recent arson incident targeting the Deutsche Bahn in Wuppertal. Late Friday evening, flames erupted in the rail area of the Oberbarmen district, where the insulation of cables at three railway switches was set ablaze. Additionally, two cables were reportedly cut, suggesting possible sabotage. A spokesperson from Deutsche Bahn indicated that preliminary findings suggest the fire was ignited using an accelerant.

The Bundespolizei (Federal Police) has taken over the investigations, focusing on the arson case that was significant enough for a nearby resident to notice the flames. A police helicopter conducted aerial searches for potential suspects but did not yield any results. According to a representative from the railway company, the fire occurred not directly on the tracks but in the vicinity of the switches, which meant that train operations were largely unaffected. However, the railway line was temporarily closed to facilitate the investigation.

Fortunately, the impact on train services was minimal, with no significant disruptions reported. The recent attack comes just weeks after another arson incident on the Düsseldorf-Duisburg railway line, where incendiary devices had been detonated, leading to extensive disruption of regional and long-distance train services. This earlier incident was claimed by a group identifying itself as the leftist 'Kommando Angry Birds', which stated their responsibility for the destruction of cables essential for switch and signal operations.

As investigations continue, the authorities remain vigilant in addressing the threats posed to vital infrastructure. The recurrence of such attacks raises concerns about safety and security measures in place to protect public transportation networks.
