Train operations between Magdeburg and Berlin continue to face significant disruptions following a fire at a signal box in Gerwisch. This incident has led to train cancellations and extensive delays, as authorities assess the situation. The railway line between Biederitz and Burg remains indefinitely closed, impacting both regional and long-distance services.

The Stendal police have reported that two technicians are now central to the investigation regarding the cause of the fire, which occurred during routine maintenance and service work. Authorities are exploring whether the fire was the result of negligent actions or a technical malfunction.

Due to the fire, numerous trains have been affected. Notably, Intercity Express (ICE) and Intercity (IC) services that operate between Berlin and Magdeburg, with stops in Potsdam and Brandenburg, have been disrupted. Passengers are facing delays of approximately 45 minutes as trains are being rerouted. Additionally, some train stops have been eliminated, further complicating travel for commuters.

For the Regional Express (RE 1) operated by ODEG, which connects Magdeburg and Berlin, passengers can expect continued service interruptions. In light of the ongoing situation, bus replacements are being deployed between Magdeburg and the nearby town of Möser.

This incident highlights the vulnerabilities within the train service infrastructure, emphasizing the need for stringent safety protocols during maintenance operations. The railway authorities are working to restore normal service as quickly as possible while ensuring thorough investigations are conducted to prevent such occurrences in the future.
