Investigation Launched into Possible Arson After Fire at Hirschaid Underpass

Mon 7th Jul, 2025

A fire incident in a pedestrian underpass in Hirschaid has led to a significant disruption on the Nürnberg-Bamberg railway line, prompting an investigation by local authorities into possible arson.

The Bamberger Kriminalpolizei (criminal police) is currently examining the circumstances surrounding the fire, which was reported by a witness early on Friday morning. The witness alerted emergency services upon noticing the flames in the underpass situated beneath the railway track. Firefighters, comprising around 20 personnel, quickly arrived at the scene to extinguish the blaze, which involved wooden pallets and planks.

As a result of the fire, the railway line between Nürnberg and Bamberg has been partially closed. According to police, preliminary assessments indicate that the structure sustained significant damage, making it unsafe for train operations. Plans for repairs are currently underway, as officials work to address the issues caused by the incident.

In the meantime, the Deutsche Bahn has implemented alternative transportation arrangements, including bus services between Forchheim and Bamberg. Travelers using the ICE service from Berlin to Munich should anticipate substantial delays, lasting until Thursday morning, as trains are redirected. The rerouting affects travel times by approximately 90 minutes, and some stops in Erlangen and Bamberg will be omitted. Furthermore, certain IC services between Nürnberg and Leipzig, as well as between Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe and Gera, have been canceled.

Authorities have not yet established any indications that the fire was intended to disrupt railway operations, with a spokesperson suggesting that the fire might have been caused inadvertently.

In addition to the disruptions stemming from the Hirschaid fire, travelers on the ICE route between Munich and Berlin should note that the high-speed line between Erfurt and Leipzig/Halle will also be closed until July 12 due to bridge upgrade work. Trains will be diverted via Weimar and Naumburg, extending travel times by an additional half an hour.
