Mallorca, a popular holiday destination for many, is currently facing a significant issue with an influx of snakes. These reptiles have been spotted in various areas across the island, including olive groves, under terraces, and within rural estates. The Association for Ecological Agriculture in Mallorca (APAEMA) has raised alarms regarding the invasive snake species that have settled in extensive parts of the island, leading to overwhelming challenges for the island's wildlife protection organization, COFIB.
Reports indicate that COFIB has already deployed hundreds of traps throughout the island in response to the growing snake population. While the problem is most visible on the uninhabited island of Sa Dragonera, sightings have increased near popular beaches and within agricultural lands. Local residents have also reported encounters with snakes in their properties, including under wooden stacks and terraces.
The primary species causing concern includes the non-venomous horseshoe, ladder, and smooth snakes. Although these snakes do not pose a lethal threat, the horseshoe snake can be quite aggressive and may bite if provoked. Such bites can lead to infections, making it essential for anyone bitten to seek medical attention promptly. Tourists are advised to wear sturdy footwear while exploring the island to minimize the risk of snake encounters.
In addition to their potential danger to humans, the presence of these non-native snakes poses a risk to local wildlife. The APAEMA emphasizes that the invasive nature of these species disrupts the ecosystem, threatening indigenous species. It is believed that these reptiles were introduced to the island through imported goods.
To mitigate this issue, APAEMA advocates for stricter inspections at ports and airports, particularly concerning the importation of plants, soil, animals, and biological materials. They argue that Mallorca should be better protected, citing that no other Mediterranean island is experiencing such a severe invasion. The organization attributes this situation to high human activity, climate change, and inadequate regulatory measures that fail to prevent new species from entering the island.
As the situation develops, the local government and environmental organizations are under pressure to implement effective strategies to manage the snake population and protect both residents and the island's biodiversity.
