Interruption in E-Prescription Services via Electronic Health Card

Fri 25th Jul, 2025

On Friday morning, a significant disruption occurred in the telematics infrastructure, impacting the ability to redeem electronic prescriptions (E-prescriptions) using the electronic health card (eGK). According to a statement from Gematik at 9:54 AM, users were unable to access these vital health services. Specific details regarding the cause and extent of the outage have not yet been disclosed. Additionally, there were indications that the electronic patient record (ePA) was also affected by this disruption.

By 11 AM, Gematik reported that the issue had been resolved and all services had resumed normal operations. Despite this prompt restoration, the recurring disruptions to the telematics infrastructure have been a source of frustration. The ABDA (Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists) highlighted that, between May 24 and June 6, disruptions were reported on eight out of fourteen days, which hindered access to electronic prescriptions.

In response to these ongoing issues, the ABDA sent a letter urging Gematik to enhance the reliability of the telematics infrastructure. Gematik responded by stating that many of the frequent outages were due to problems caused by external service providers.

These interruptions raise concerns about the robustness of the digital health systems that are increasingly relied upon by both healthcare providers and patients. The reliance on digital solutions, while beneficial in many ways, has also revealed vulnerabilities that need addressing to ensure consistent access to healthcare services.
