Instagram has officially announced that it has reached over three billion daily active users, solidifying its position as one of the most widely used social media platforms globally. This remarkable milestone highlights the app's growing popularity, especially in comparison to competitors like TikTok, which has around half as many daily users, and X (formerly Twitter), which sees only millions of daily active users. Facebook, another platform under Meta's umbrella, has more than two billion daily active users.
In a recently shared video, Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, credited the platform's innovative features such as Reels and Direct Messages (DMs) for contributing significantly to this achievement. Reels, which are short video clips inspired by TikTok, allow users to quickly swipe through a variety of videos tailored to their interests. Instagram has shifted its content strategy to include more video content in users' feeds, moving away from the initial focus on static images.
In light of this growth, Mosseri has announced plans to personalize the Reels feed further. Users will soon be able to indicate their preferences for similar content while watching videos, thereby enhancing their viewing experience. This initiative aligns with the European Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates that online platforms provide greater transparency and control over the content users see. Currently, Meta allows users to mark content as 'not interesting,' and parents can set restrictions on certain keywords for their children.
Additionally, Instagram is revamping its home screen interface. The app will soon relocate the content upload button to the top left corner and place the Direct Messages icon in the center of the bottom menu, which was previously reserved for uploads. The heart icon for liking posts will remain on the right.
In response to the competitive landscape, TikTok is also enhancing its messaging capabilities. The platform is making it easier for users to send photos in group chats, similar to traditional messaging apps, while maintaining a one-minute limit for voice messages--a feature that Instagram also employs. In contrast, WhatsApp allows users to send entire podcast episodes privately to friends.
Recently, Instagram has also made strides in expanding its compatibility with devices, including the launch of an app specifically for iPad users. These developments reflect Instagram's ongoing efforts to innovate and adapt to the changing needs of its user base.
