Instagram Launches Location Sharing Feature in Germany

Mon 6th Oct, 2025

Instagram has officially rolled out its location sharing feature for users in Germany, following its initial launch in the United States earlier this year. This new functionality provides an alternative to similar services like Snap Map, allowing users to share their whereabouts with friends.

As previously indicated by Instagram, this feature does not offer real-time tracking. Instead, the last known location will only be updated when a user opens the app or returns to it. After a duration of 24 hours, or optionally three hours, the shared location will automatically disappear from the Instagram map.

By default, location sharing is turned off and must be activated by each user. To enable this feature, users can navigate to the 'Settings and Activities' section, select 'Story and Location,' and then click on 'Share Location.'

Indicators on the map will show whether location sharing is active. A blue arrow signifies that the location is being shared, while a red arrow or orange triangle indicates that it is not. If the latter appears, users will need to adjust their location permissions.

Instagram assures users that they will maintain control over who can see their shared location. Users can choose to share their location with all 'Friends,' 'Close Friends,' specific 'Friends,' or no one at all. Additionally, the location sharing feature can be selectively disabled for certain places or contacts. Parents also have the option to monitor their teenagers' location sharing activities and will receive notifications when their children share their location.
