In a significant step towards accountability, the German government is preparing to investigate the nation's response to the COVID-19 pandemic over five years following its onset. The parliamentary coalition of the CDU and SPD has proposed establishing an inquiry commission aimed at thoroughly reviewing the crisis management strategies employed during the pandemic.
A debate in the Bundestag is set to address the issues surrounding the procurement of masks, a controversial topic that has drawn ongoing criticism of former Health Minister Jens Spahn. Health Minister Nina Warken, currently in charge of the health portfolio, along with Spahn, will be summoned to provide insight into a report compiled by special investigator Margaretha Sudhof, appointed in 2024 by Warken's predecessor, Karl Lauterbach.
While the inquiry commission's establishment is welcomed by some, it has not gone without dissent. Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the BSW party, condemned the inquiry as merely a superficial gesture that fails to address the deeper issues stemming from the pandemic response. She argued that the focus should extend beyond the mask procurement controversy, highlighting what she perceives as significant missteps and injustices, including excessively stringent lockdown measures.
Critics, including Andreas Audretsch, vice chair of the Green parliamentary group, have accused Spahn and Warken of lacking a genuine commitment to transparency regarding the procurement processes. Audretsch pointed out that substantial portions of Sudhof's report remain blacked out or illegible, particularly concerning contracts with specific companies, emphasizing the need for greater clarity in these dealings.
Furthermore, Janosch Dahmen, the health policy spokesperson for the Greens, echoed concerns about the inquiry commission, urging for a transparent and thorough examination of the decisions made during the pandemic.
The move to establish an inquiry comes at a time when many are calling for a comprehensive review of governmental actions during a period marked by unprecedented public health challenges. The outcome of the Bundestag's discussions and the subsequent formation of the inquiry commission will be critical in shaping public trust and accountability in future health crises.
