Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment: New Radiolabeled Antibody for Solid Tumors

A recent study has introduced a novel radiolabeled antibody designed to target the cancer-associated antigen IL13R?2, showing significant potential for both diagnosis and treatment of various solid tumors. The lead researcher emphasized that up until now, no antibodies targeting IL13R?2 have been available for clinical diagnostic or therapeutic use. The development of this radiolabeled antibody aims to achieve enhanced tumor uptake and retention, allowing for the delivery of cytotoxic radiation directly to cancerous cells without affecting surrounding healthy tissue.

During the study, five distinct human anti-IL13R?2 antibodies were created, with the KLG-3 variant emerging as the most effective in preclinical tests. Further analysis included biodistribution studies that indicated the potential for effective dosimetry using a therapeutic counterpart labeled with ^177Lu. This suggests that KLG-3 could be utilized not only for imaging but also as a therapeutic agent, potentially allowing for effective cancer treatment at lower doses.
