Breakthrough in Electric Vehicle Batteries: Chinese Manufacturer Unveils Three Innovative Super Batteries

Wed 23rd Apr, 2025

In a significant advancement for electric vehicle (EV) technology, Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) has introduced three new battery designs that could revolutionize the performance of electric cars. These innovations promise extended driving ranges, rapid charging capabilities, and reliable operation in cold climates.

The first of these new batteries, known as the Freevoy Dual Power Battery, is designed to allow electric vehicles to travel up to 1500 kilometers on a single charge. This remarkable range enables drivers to journey from Berlin to Rome without needing to recharge. The innovation lies in the dual-cell configuration, which combines Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells for everyday use with Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) cells that pack more energy into a smaller space, effectively balancing affordability and high performance for long-distance travel.

Moreover, CATL has integrated a new material in place of conventional graphite to enhance energy storage, resulting in a battery that can store more power and extend driving distances between charges.

The second battery, dubbed Shenxing, is engineered for ultra-fast charging. It can replenish over 500 kilometers of range in just five minutes, making it comparable to traditional refueling stops for gasoline vehicles. This model also excels in colder temperatures, capable of charging up to 80% in just 15 minutes even at minus 10 degrees Celsius, a critical feature for regions that experience harsh winters. This iteration of the Shenxing battery is reported to be three times faster than its predecessor.

The third innovation is the Naxtra battery, utilizing sodium-ion technology instead of the more expensive lithium. This battery is not only cheaper to produce but also exhibits enhanced safety and resilience in cold environments. In rigorous testing, it withstood significant stress without igniting or exploding, proving its robustness. The Naxtra battery can be fully charged in about twelve minutes and remains functional in extreme temperatures, operating effectively in conditions as low as minus 30 to minus 40 degrees Celsius. In hybrid vehicles, it can provide power for approximately 200 kilometers, while in full electric vehicles, it can extend the range to 500 kilometers.

These advancements by CATL could significantly enhance the practicality and appeal of electric vehicles, potentially accelerating the adoption of electric mobility worldwide.
