Moreover, conventional tests such as blood cultures and inflammatory panels can take several hours or even days to yield actionable results, thereby hindering prompt clinical responses. The BLIPI device revolutionizes this approach by requiring only 0.05 ml of blood and delivering results within a mere 15 minutes.
A recent study published in Pediatric Research details how BLIPI utilizes microfluidic technology to assess changes in immune cells during infection by measuring their size and flexibility. Unlike standard tests that merely detect the presence of pathogens, BLIPI provides a direct view of how an infant's immune system is responding to an infection. The cellular changes detected by BLIPI correspond with traditional tests that healthcare professionals utilize, including C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, white blood cell counts, and immature-to-total neutrophil ratios. In tests involving 19 infants--eight full-term and eleven preterm--BLIPI was able to distinguish clear differences in immune cell behavior. Notably, the device detected significant changes in immune cells in one premature infant who developed a severe blood infection, underscoring its potential for early infection detection.
The portable BLIPI device can provide results directly in hospital wards or neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), eliminating the need to transport blood samples to laboratories, which is particularly beneficial in resource-limited or rural healthcare contexts.
Essentially, BLIPI only requires one drop of blood, significantly reducing the blood volume needed compared to existing methods. This rapid turnaround can assist clinicians in making critical, life-saving decisions in scenarios such as sepsis or NEC, where timely treatment is paramount.
The researchers aim to conduct larger clinical trials to confirm BLIPI's diagnostic accuracy across various neonatal populations with differing medical conditions and age groups. Additionally, they plan to enhance the device's design for broader implementation in hospitals worldwide, offering a vital diagnostic resource for at-risk infants at their bedside.
