The Boston University team benchmarked their new algorithm against standard industry practices, finding that existing solutions often do not improve performance and can sometimes exacerbate communication difficulties.
Named the Biologically Oriented Sound Segregation Algorithm (BOSSA), the patented technology leverages spatial auditory cues--such as sound volume and timing--to enhance the clarity of desired conversations while diminishing background noise. This model emulates the brain's natural sound processing capabilities, allowing users to focus on specific speakers more effectively.
Professor Kamal Sen, who developed the algorithm, has dedicated two decades to studying how the brain encodes and decodes auditory information. His research examines the neural circuits that manage complex sound environments. The algorithm's design mimics the brain's internal mechanisms that suppress unwanted noise, which enhances the clarity of targeted speech.
In collaboration with clinical researchers, the effectiveness of the new algorithm was tested through studies involving young adults with sensorineural hearing loss. Participants were tasked with identifying speakers in simulated environments mimicking crowded settings. The results indicated that the biologically inspired algorithm provided significant improvements in intelligibility compared to standard methods.
Looking ahead, the researchers are exploring enhancements to the algorithm that could integrate eye-tracking technology, allowing users to direct their listening focus even more precisely. Furthermore, the implications of this research extend beyond hearing loss; the underlying principles of the algorithm could potentially benefit individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or autism, who also struggle in multi-sensory environments.
The Boston University team aims to collaborate with hearing aid manufacturers to bring this innovative technology to market, especially in light of the increasing competition presented by tech companies like Apple, which is venturing into the hearing aid sector.
