The regional train service RE3, which connects Berlin to Stralsund via Prenzlau, is set to see an increase in train frequency, according to announcements from Brandenburg's Transport Minister. However, this enhancement comes alongside plans to reduce services during less popular travel times, particularly in the early morning hours.
Minister Detlef Tabbert indicated that certain train services would be discontinued in off-peak hours where ridership averages fewer than ten passengers. This decision is expected to affect specific routes in Brandenburg when the new schedule is implemented in December 2025. The rationale behind this reduction is based on the observation that some trains, such as those operating at 4 a.m., have reported minimal usage, with as few as two passengers on average.
While the intention is to enhance the efficiency of the transportation network, Tabbert acknowledged that commuters would likely be impacted by these changes, and efforts will be made to ensure that affected passengers receive timely notifications about the alterations in service.
In contrast to these reductions, the RE3 line will be reinforced in collaboration with neighboring regions, including Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin. The updated schedule will offer hourly services, which is anticipated to meet the growing demand for this particular route. The additional financial burden on the state for these enhanced services is estimated at around 3 million euros annually, representing the most cost-effective solution available.
Moreover, the RE3 line is popular not only among daily commuters but also among travelers heading to the Baltic Sea, highlighting its significance in the regional transit framework. While some long-distance trains operated by Deutsche Bahn have allowed the use of regional tickets like the Deutschlandticket on selected routes, this practice is slated for discontinuation. Instead, a consistent hourly service on the RE3 line is expected to provide a practical alternative for passengers.
