The incidence of counterfeit currency in Germany has seen a significant uptick, with the latest figures indicating a worrying trend in the circulation of fake banknotes. The Deutsche Bundesbank has highlighted that, although the number of fakes has risen sharply, the quality of these counterfeits remains largely unimproved, making them relatively easy to identify.
Recent reports reveal that in the previous year, authorities in Germany confiscated 72,413 counterfeit banknotes, marking an increase of 28% compared to the year before. This rise in counterfeit currency is part of a broader trend observed across Europe, where the total number of seized counterfeit Euro notes increased by 18.6% to reach 554,000.
Among the counterfeit notes circulating, a notable proportion--17%--are fake banknotes marketed as "Movie Money" or "Prop Copy," often mimicking 10 and 20 Euro bills. These imitation notes can easily be mistaken for real currency, especially by those unaware of their illegality.
Burkhard Balz, a member of the Bundesbank board, emphasized that while the number of counterfeits is increasing, they are typically easy to detect due to their poor quality. The counterfeiters primarily focus on lower denominations, with 50 and 20 Euro notes being the most commonly faked. In fact, 40% of the counterfeit notes in Germany are 50 Euro bills, reflecting their prevalence in everyday transactions.
Despite the rising numbers, the financial impact of counterfeit currency has decreased slightly. The total losses due to counterfeit money fell from 5.1 million Euros in 2023 to 4.5 million Euros last year. This decline is partly attributed to fewer high-denomination notes, such as 200 and 500 Euro bills, entering circulation as part of fraudulent activities.
In a coordinated effort across 18 European countries, law enforcement agencies, including Europol, seized 174 packages containing fake currency with a nominal value of 14 million Euros. This operation highlighted the ongoing issue of counterfeit currency being disguised as prop money used in films and theater productions.
Although the number of counterfeit notes is on the rise, the Bundesbank reassures the public that the risk of receiving fake money is relatively low, with an average of nine counterfeit notes per 10,000 residents in Germany, compared to 16 per 10,000 across Europe. However, individuals receiving counterfeit notes are advised to report them to the police or the Bundesbank, as attempting to pass them off as real currency is considered a criminal offense.
Furthermore, counterfeit coins are also a concern, with a reported 141,332 fake coins, primarily two Euro pieces, detected in the German economy last year, representing a 22% increase. The Bundesbank noted that many businesses had been holding onto these counterfeit coins for years before reporting them.
As the trend of counterfeit currency continues to soar, authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance among consumers to help mitigate the risks associated with accepting fake notes.
