Growth in Electric Vehicle Charging Points in Berlin

Fri 25th Apr, 2025

Berlin is witnessing a significant increase in the number of public charging points for electric vehicles (EVs). As of February 1, 2025, nearly 5,700 public charging stations were available on the streets of the capital, according to data released by the Federal Network Agency. This marks a remarkable rise of over 25% compared to the same period last year.

However, this increase does not necessarily translate to easier access for EV owners seeking available charging spots. A large portion of these charging points consists of standard stations, providing a maximum charging capacity of 22 kilowatts. In contrast, the number of fast-charging stations, which offer higher charging speeds, remains limited, with just over 800 available in the city at the same date.

The growing number of charging points does not correlate with a decrease in the challenges faced by EV owners. The total count of registered electric vehicles in Berlin has also surged, with approximately 42,000 purely electric cars recorded at the start of the new year, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority. This results in an average of around 7.5 vehicles competing for each available charging point, a figure that remains consistent with the previous year.

As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, the supply of charging infrastructure will need to expand accordingly to ensure convenience for users. The city's efforts to enhance its EV charging network are crucial for supporting the transition towards more sustainable transportation solutions.
