Authorities intercepted a significant haul of illegal fireworks during a routine border inspection at Küstrin-Kietz, close to the German-Polish border in Brandenburg. Federal police officers discovered the prohibited pyrotechnics on Sunday evening while inspecting a vehicle registered in Berlin.
During the search, officers uncovered approximately 15,000 bird-scaring cartridges, several boxes containing high-powered fireworks classified under categories F3 and F4, as well as four spherical explosive devices. The total pyrotechnic material amounted to roughly 70 kilograms of explosive content.
The driver, a 22-year-old individual, failed to present the mandatory import permits required for transporting such items into Germany. As a result, law enforcement authorities initiated proceedings against the driver for suspected violations of Germany's Explosives Act and Weapons Act.
Pursuant to German regulations, only pyrotechnic items categorized as F1 and F2 are permitted for general sale and use, particularly during New Year celebrations. Fireworks in categories F3 and F4, which are more powerful and pose greater risks, are strictly reserved for professionals and may only be acquired and ignited with explicit official approval.
The seizure comes amid an anticipated increase in attempts to smuggle fireworks into Germany ahead of New Year's Eve, a period traditionally associated with heightened demand for pyrotechnics. The authorities regularly intensify border controls during this period to prevent the import and distribution of dangerous or unauthorized fireworks.
Police stress the potential dangers posed by illegal fireworks, which often do not comply with safety standards and can result in severe injuries or property damage. In addition to posing physical risks, the unlawful import and possession of such items can lead to significant legal consequences, including fines and criminal charges.
Law enforcement agencies continue to remind the public that the purchase, possession, and use of unauthorized pyrotechnics is strictly regulated. Citizens are advised to purchase fireworks only from reputable sources that comply with German safety and certification standards.
Investigations into the origin and intended destination of the seized pyrotechnics are ongoing. The authorities have also reiterated their commitment to preventing the illegal trade of dangerous fireworks and ensuring public safety during the festive season.
