Axe Attack on Passengers in ICE Train Traveling from Hamburg to Vienna

An incident occurred aboard an InterCity-Express (ICE) train traveling from Hamburg to Vienna in Lower Bavaria, where a man attacked several passengers with an axe. The attack took place shortly before 2 PM, between Regensburg and Plattling, resulting in minor injuries to four individuals.

Passengers activated the emergency stop, prompting the train to halt in Straßkirchen. Reports indicate that the assailant was armed with an axe, and additional weaponry, including a hammer, was also discovered. The perpetrator was reportedly subdued by a fellow passenger who managed to wrestle the weapons away from him, resulting in injuries to the attacker as well.

The assailant, who is believed to be a Syrian national, has not been officially identified. Emergency services, including police, firefighters, and medical personnel, responded swiftly, arriving at the scene with a substantial presence. The attacker was taken into custody in Straßkirchen and is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries. Fortunately, none of the injured passengers are reported to be in life-threatening condition.

Following the incident, the section of the railway between Straubing and Plattling was closed, and a substitute bus service was implemented for the stranded passengers. Approximately 500 travelers were aboard ICE 91 at the time of the attack, and a support station has been established to assist those affected.

The Bavarian Red Cross has deployed numerous personnel, including two helicopters and various units for psychosocial support, to provide care for both injured and uninjured passengers who may be experiencing trauma from the event.

The Deutsche Bahn expressed its condolences to the victims and their families, stating that their thoughts are with those affected by the incident. They also extended gratitude to the emergency responders for their prompt actions leading to the arrest of the suspect.
