Hungary Faces Potential 24-Year Sentence for Suspected Member of Violent Group

Fri 21st Feb, 2025

In a highly publicized court appearance in Budapest, Maja T., a 23-year-old individual alleged to be associated with the notorious 'Hammerbande' group, was escorted into the courtroom by Hungarian authorities. The accused was seen wearing handcuffs and a hefty belt, which was attached to a leash leading to their designated seat.

Reportedly, Maja T. is believed to be part of the 'Hammerbande,' a violent faction that has targeted right-wing extremists in Budapest. The charges stem from violent altercations that occurred between February 9 and 11, 2023, during which Maja T. allegedly participated in assaults on attendees of a far-right gathering.

The prosecution has leveled serious accusations against Maja T., including attempted aggravated assault, and is advocating for a substantial prison sentence of up to 24 years. Maja T. has been in custody since June 2024 at a facility in Budapest.

In December 2023, Maja T. was apprehended in Berlin and subsequently extradited to Hungary, where they have since been held in solitary confinement. The German Federal Constitutional Court ruled earlier this year that the conditions of this extradition were inadmissible. Today's preliminary hearing is focused on procedural questions related to the case.

Supporters of Maja T. were present in the courtroom, demonstrating solidarity with the accused. This case has drawn significant attention, especially given the context of violent incidents involving the 'Hammerbande.' In February 2023, the group was involved in an assault on participants at an international neo-Nazi event known as the 'Day of Honor,' resulting in multiple injuries, including bruises and fractures among the victims.

Following the group's surrender over fears of extradition, the violence resumed, with protests erupting in Leipzig shortly after. Reports indicate that Maja T.'s family has raised concerns regarding inhumane conditions in the Budapest prison, citing continuous video surveillance and limited outdoor access. Additionally, they claimed that the cell is infested with pests, leading to skin irritations on Maja T.'s arms.

The upcoming trial will be closely monitored as it unfolds, reflecting larger societal tensions surrounding political extremism in Hungary and beyond.
