HP has announced the launch of its HP Dimension, a cutting-edge 3D video conferencing system that utilizes Google's innovative Beam technology, also referred to as Project Starline. This sophisticated solution aims to provide users with a lifelike representation of their conversation partners, though it comes at a steep price of $25,000.
The HP Dimension is equipped with a 65-inch light field display boasting an 8K resolution, complemented by six high-speed cameras integrated into the device's frame. This setup is designed to create a nearly three-dimensional video image of the user. To achieve this effect, a state-of-the-art volumetric AI video model is employed, capable of transforming 2D video streams into realistic 3D representations, as explained by Google.
To generate the 3D effect of the person being viewed, an optical layer consisting of microlenses is placed above the display. These microlenses manipulate the direction of light rays emitted from the screen, resulting in a spatial view of the individual. Additionally, spatial audio and adaptive backlighting contribute to a more immersive experience.
The technology was initially showcased by Google at I/O 2021 under the name Project Starline. The original prototype was a significant installation, comprising a 65-inch 8K panel, speakers, microphones, lighting, a computer, and multiple camera setups, all sized similarly to a restaurant booth. Over the years, Google has refined the technology, reducing its footprint to match that of a flat-screen television.
During the I/O 2025 event, Google rebranded the 3D video conferencing solution as Google Beam and announced HP as its first hardware partner. Prior to this partnership, Google conducted trials within its organization and through an Early Access Program, collaborating with companies like Salesforce, T-Mobile, and WeWork to gather data on the technology's effectiveness in helping remote workers maintain connections.
According to Google's findings from 2023, interactions during video calls using the 3D solution proved to be more engaging. Participants displayed more animated behaviors, utilizing increased hand gestures, nodding, and eyebrow movements compared to traditional video conferencing. They also reported a significantly enhanced ability to perceive and convey nonverbal cues, resulting in improved conversation dynamics.
However, there is a notable limitation with the 3D conferencing solution: only one person can participate in video calls per screen. This restriction arises due to the facial and eye tracking features, which are not effective with multiple individuals in view.
The HP Dimension is primarily targeted at businesses and will be available for $25,000. It is set to launch later this year in various markets, including the USA, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, and Japan. Companies such as Salesforce, Deloitte, and NEC have already committed to integrating Google Beam into their office environments.
It is important to note that the purchase price of the 3D video conferencing system covers only the hardware. Additional costs will apply for the software license required for video calls. However, the exact pricing for a separate Google Beam license, which would grant access to platforms like Zoom or Google Meet, has not been disclosed by either Google or HP.
