Authorities in South Africa have confirmed the recovery of human remains believed to belong to a missing hotel manager who vanished after an incident involving the Komati River near Komatipoort. The discovery was made after a week-long search operation, which concluded with the examination of a nearly five-meter-long crocodile.
The search began when the hotel manager, Gabriel Batista, failed to arrive at his destination after attempting to cross a low-water bridge with his vehicle. The Komati River, swollen due to recent rainfall, had submerged the bridge and caused his vehicle to be swept against rocks. The vehicle was later found abandoned, prompting concerns for his safety and leading to an extensive search by local authorities and police divers.
Investigators utilized drone surveillance to monitor the riverbanks and identified several crocodiles on a small island approximately 60 meters from the bridge. One crocodile, in particular, was noted to have an unusually distended abdomen and appeared lethargic on the riverbank, leading authorities to suspect it may have consumed the missing individual.
Following protocol, the animal was euthanized by a trained marksman to ensure safe recovery and analysis. The crocodile, weighing around 500 kilograms, was retrieved with the assistance of a helicopter. Upon examination, law enforcement officials discovered human remains inside the animal, including two arms and part of a rib cage. A ring was found on one of the hands, which may help confirm the identity of the deceased through DNA analysis. The investigation is ongoing to verify the victim's identity conclusively.
Further inspection of the crocodile's stomach contents revealed six pairs of shoes, none belonging to the hotel manager, indicating the possibility of additional victims. Police are now cross-referencing local missing persons reports to determine whether other individuals may have fallen prey to similar attacks in the area.
The incident has raised concerns among local residents and authorities regarding the safety risks posed by large crocodiles in the Komati River, particularly during periods of high water. The presence of multiple pairs of shoes within the animal suggests that it may have been involved in previous attacks, prompting renewed attention to public safety measures near waterways known to host crocodile populations.
A spokesperson for the hotel described the manager as a respected community member, noting his role as a family man and his popularity with guests. The family has requested privacy until the results of DNA testing are finalized.
Law enforcement agencies have urged caution around the river, especially following heavy rains, and are working with wildlife experts to monitor and manage the crocodile population in the region. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities focusing on both the identification of the remains and the review of unresolved missing persons cases in the vicinity.
