Paralyzed Rabbit Hot Wheels Rolls Back to Life with Innovative Support

A severely ill rabbit, found paralyzed in a field, has made a remarkable recovery thanks to the compassionate efforts of caregivers at an animal shelter in Aalen. Named Hot Wheels, this giant rabbit has begun to regain mobility with the help of a custom-built mobility device.

Initially brought to the shelter after being discovered in a vulnerable state, Hot Wheels underwent a thorough veterinary examination. While it was suspected that the rabbit might have been hit by a vehicle, it was later diagnosed with the Encephalitozoon cuniculi (EC) disease, a single-celled organism that affects the central nervous system. Symptoms of this disease can include head tilting and paralysis of the hind legs.

In a creative solution, the animal shelter staff designed a mobility aid out of a birdhouse, modifying it to create a makeshift wheelchair. They removed the walls of the birdhouse and attached wheels, allowing Hot Wheels to rest on a small cushion while using his upper body to propel himself forward, with his hind legs on the ground. This device not only supports his movement but also serves as a form of physical therapy, greatly improving his quality of life.

As time has progressed, Hot Wheels has shown significant improvement. He is now able to stand up independently and even move around on his own. He navigates to his water and food bowls and eagerly anticipates the arrival of caregivers, particularly enjoying sunny spots during his outdoor time. The staff at the shelter are optimistic about his recovery, noting that he is gaining strength and confidence each day.

In addition to the physical support provided by the mobility aid, Hot Wheels is receiving appropriate medications to assist in his recovery. The animal shelter is now actively seeking a permanent home or a suitable foster care situation for him. The caregivers express their joy at witnessing his daily improvements and hope that he will find a loving family soon, as they believe that nothing can replace the comfort of a true home.
