Hospital Implements AI to Enhance Patient Admission Processes

Thu 20th Feb, 2025

In a bid to tackle the challenges posed by overcrowded emergency departments and issues related to patient accommodation, a hospital in Potsdam is launching an innovative project that harnesses the power of artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative, led by the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI), aims to improve the patient admission process and hospital bed management.

The project, currently active at the Ernst von Bergmann Hospital, will utilize a predictive AI model that analyzes algorithms to forecast patient inflow and bed availability. According to researchers at HPI, the model will integrate various data sources, including weather patterns and information from the Robert Koch Institute, to enhance its predictive capabilities.

With approximately 1,000 beds, the hospital is optimistic that the new digital system will alleviate the pressures faced by the healthcare sector, as stated by the hospital's Digital Chief. The facility has already adopted an integrated capacity management system, which has been operational since October, under the guidance of its management team. This system leverages real-time data displayed on multiple screens, providing instant insights into bed availability and patient admissions and discharges.

Previously, the hospital staff faced challenges due to a lack of visibility regarding available beds, often necessitating extensive communication across various departments to locate suitable accommodations for patients. The implementation of this new electronic data system is expected to streamline the admission process, thereby expanding the capacity for patient care.

Researchers at HPI are collaborating with students to develop a prototype AI system that will predict the necessary bed capacity and the anticipated duration of patient stays, while also factoring in external elements such as weather forecasts and infection rates. However, the timeline for the deployment of this AI model remains uncertain.

The German Hospital Association has expressed confidence in the ongoing development of AI systems within healthcare settings. They indicated that AI is already being utilized to optimize surgical and staffing schedules, suggesting that its application for improving bed capacity management is a logical next step.

Many hospitals across Germany are currently facing severe financial difficulties. The Ernst von Bergmann Hospital, in particular, is grappling with a significant financial deficit and requires urgent renovations.
