Lüneburg, Lower Saxony - A dramatic incident unfolded early in the morning when a startled horse galloped through a pasture fence and ended up in a swimming pool. The local volunteer fire department received an urgent call at 5:17 AM reporting that a horse was trapped in a pool, prompting a prompt response from 16 firefighters.
Upon arrival, the team discovered the brown mare standing in the water up to her belly. Fortunately, the 600-kilogram animal was unharmed, though visibly distressed. A veterinarian was called to the scene and administered a calming injection to help alleviate the horse's anxiety.
The fire department's incident commander devised a plan to safely extract the mare from the pool. After considering various options, they decided to construct a makeshift staircase using wooden pallets borrowed from a nearby farm. To ensure the horse's safety, the pallets were reinforced with non-slip mats.
As the firefighters carefully drained the water from the pool, the horse's owner remained close by, providing comfort and reassurance to her pet. The team successfully assembled the pallet stairs, creating a stable exit route for the mare.
After some time and with the help of food and hay as distractions, the horse finally ascended the improvised staircase and emerged from the pool without any further incident. The firefighters expressed their relief, noting that their secondary plan involved using hoses attached to a tractor, which would have created a much more chaotic situation.
Within two hours, the mare was safely back in her pasture, recovering from the ordeal. The quick thinking and resourcefulness of the firefighters played a crucial role in ensuring the horse's safe return to its owner, showcasing the dedication and creativity often required in emergency rescue situations.
