The renowned SVT Görlitz express train, originally constructed in 1968 for the Deutsche Reichsbahn, has been restored to operational condition following more than five years of meticulous renovation work. The project, which incurred costs of approximately 7 million euros, aimed to return the streamlined train to its former glory for the benefit of railway enthusiasts and the general public.
Railway fans gathered in Radebeul to witness the return of the iconic vehicle, celebrated for its distinctive aerodynamic design and prominent nose. After an unveiling ceremony in the Harz region, the train embarked on its inaugural journey, traveling to Magdeburg and then back to Halberstadt. The following day, the train continued its route through Halle and Leipzig, culminating in a festive welcome in Radebeul.
The SVT Görlitz, once a symbol of technological achievement in East German rail travel, was built for high-speed service and was capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. Only eight trains of this specific type were manufactured during the late 1960s, and they played a significant role in international rail connections, linking cities such as Berlin, Prague, and Vienna.
Plans are now in place for the train to be featured in regular special excursions, offering passengers the opportunity to experience rail travel as it was decades ago. According to representatives from SVT Görlitz gGmbH, future itineraries will include journeys to destinations such as Prague, Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad), the Rhine Valley, Hamburg, and the island of Sylt. Additionally, a themed journey scheduled for June 28 will transport fans of the band Keimzeit from Dresden to a concert in Cottbus.
The restoration process involved extensive refurbishment of both the train's mechanical systems and its historically significant interior. Craftsmanship was prioritized to preserve authentic details, ensuring that the train remains true to its original design while meeting modern safety standards. The project received support from a variety of sources, reflecting the cultural and technological importance attributed to preserving Germany's railway heritage.
The reintroduction of the SVT Görlitz is expected to appeal to a wide range of railway aficionados, history enthusiasts, and tourists interested in unique travel experiences. The train's scheduled operations will enable visitors to explore notable routes across Germany and neighboring countries in a setting that recalls a significant era in European rail history.
Organizers anticipate strong demand for seats on these special journeys, with booking information and additional details to be made available to the public through official channels. The SVT Görlitz's return highlights ongoing efforts to maintain and celebrate the legacy of historical transportation technology in the region.
