In South Asia, the monsoon season has brought not just the much-needed rain but also devastation, with flash floods and landslides claiming the lives of over 365 individuals across Pakistan and India. Rescue operations are ongoing as many people remain missing after entire communities in the Himalayan region were inundated.
According to a spokesperson from Pakistan's national disaster management authority, the death toll has risen to more than 300 in the country alone. The district of Buner in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been particularly hard hit. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate survivors and recover bodies from the debris and mud following a severe cloudburst. Tragically, five rescuers lost their lives in a helicopter crash during these operations.
The adverse weather conditions and the remote location of the disaster zone have complicated rescue efforts, which are also being supported by the military. The provincial government has declared a day of mourning on Saturday, emphasizing the severity of the situation. Authorities have noted that the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
In the Indian-administered region of Kashmir, rescue efforts continue as well, with local authorities reporting 65 fatalities. Around 200 individuals have sustained injuries, many of them serious. The area surrounding the village of Chositi in the Kishtwar district is particularly chaotic, with fears of additional casualties as 33 people are still unaccounted for. This village is known as a stopping point along a popular pilgrimage route to a Hindu shrine, and it has been reported that makeshift kitchens were swept away by the flooding while pilgrims were having their meals.
Flooding incidents have also been reported in the Pakistani-controlled part of Kashmir and in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, which borders India and China.
The monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, often leads to flash floods in the Himalayan area. The disaster management authority in Pakistan has recorded at least 634 deaths since the onset of this year's monsoon season. Meanwhile, residents of northern Indian states such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are grappling with similar challenges, facing floods and landslides due to the intense rainfall.
Moreover, in Nepal, the disaster management department has reported that at least 124 individuals have died due to flash floods and landslides related to the monsoon and preceding weather phenomena since mid-April.
