Hertha BSC Parts Ways with Coach Cristian Fiél Following Disappointing Streak

Sun 16th Feb, 2025

Hertha BSC has reportedly decided to part ways with their head coach Cristian Fiél, according to sources from Sky. The announcement of this decision came shortly after the team's 1-2 defeat against Fortuna Düsseldorf, marking a turbulent period for the club.

Fiél, who had been at the helm for nearly eight months, is set to be replaced by Stefan Leitl, alongside his assistant coach Andre Mijatovic, a former player for Hertha. Negotiations regarding this transition are reportedly in their final stages, although an agreement with Leitl's current club, Hannover 96, remains pending. At 47 years old, Leitl had been managing Hannover until the end of the previous year but is still under contract with them.

Hertha's upcoming match is scheduled for Friday at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, where they will face 1. FC Nürnberg. The situation at the club has worsened, with the team slipping further away from their aspirations for promotion as they now find themselves entrenched in a relegation battle instead.

Fiél's tenure has not met expectations, as the team has consistently struggled to perform. Their recent loss against Fortuna Düsseldorf marked the fourth consecutive defeat, leading to increasing pressure on the coaching staff. Hertha's sporting director acknowledged the team's struggles and indicated a need for immediate improvement in their performance.

The club's ambitions to return to the Bundesliga have been severely hindered, especially given their descent in the standings since December. Hertha had been in a promising position earlier in the season, sitting sixth after the tenth matchday, just two points shy of a direct promotion spot. However, the team's form has significantly declined, as they now sit in thirteenth place after the latest matchday.

One of the most challenging moments for Fiél came with a humiliating 0-2 loss against bottom-placed Jahn Regensburg earlier this month. The frustration among fans has become palpable, with some expressing their discontent during matches, including a recent home game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

As Hertha BSC navigates this critical juncture in their season, the management's decision to change coaches reflects their determination to steer the team back on course. The upcoming matches will be crucial as they seek to secure vital points in their fight against relegation.
