Authorities in Herdecke, a town situated in Germany's Ruhr region, have disclosed new details regarding a violent incident involving the town's recently elected mayor. According to investigators, the victim--a 57-year-old woman set to assume mayoral office--sustained life-threatening injuries in what is believed to be a prolonged and deliberate assault allegedly carried out by her 17-year-old adopted daughter.

The attack reportedly took place on a Tuesday, with preliminary findings indicating that the victim was subjected to several hours of intimidation and physical mistreatment in the basement of her home. Law enforcement officials have stated that the teenager is suspected of threatening and harming her mother over an extended period before ultimately inflicting multiple stab wounds. The victim was found with numerous injuries, including wounds to the head and body.

Further examination of the crime scene revealed attempts to conceal evidence. Before emergency services were contacted, substantial blood traces had been cleaned from parts of the residence. Additionally, investigators discovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack, along with bloodstained clothing, in the room of the family's 15-year-old adopted son. Authorities are currently assessing whether he played any direct role in the incident, though his involvement has not yet been established.

During the ordeal, the teenage suspect is believed to have used a combination of a spray can and a lighter in an attempt to ignite her mother's hair and clothing. Reports indicate that the confrontation was accompanied by heated arguments between the family members, lasting for an extended period prior to the physical assault.

The victim ultimately suffered a total of 13 stab wounds, according to forensic assessments. Despite the severity of her injuries, she is reported to be in stable condition and has since been removed from immediate danger. Authorities have classified the case as one of grievous bodily harm, though the motive behind the attack remains under investigation. Family disputes and ongoing tensions within the household have been noted by both police and prosecutors as possible contributing factors.

After the assault, the accused teenager herself contacted emergency services, initially claiming that her mother had been attacked by an unknown intruder. However, subsequent statements and evidence contradicted this account, leading investigators to focus on the daughter as the primary suspect. The mayor-elect, who is a trained legal professional, eventually identified her daughter as responsible for the attack after initially withholding this information.

The incident has prompted a temporary change in municipal leadership. With the intended inauguration of the new mayor postponed, Herdecke's administrative responsibilities have been assumed by the town's deputy official until further notice.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case, including the potential involvement of other family members and the underlying reasons for the violent confrontation. The incident has drawn considerable attention in the region, highlighting the serious and complex nature of domestic conflicts.
