HBO Max Prepares for Launch in Germany with Potential Price Adjustments

Thu 11th Sep, 2025

As HBO Max gears up for its anticipated launch in Germany, discussions surrounding pricing strategies have become a focal point. The Chief Executive Officer of Warner Bros. Discovery has indicated that significant price increases may be on the horizon for the streaming platform, which has yet to officially debut in the German market.

During a recent conference organized by Goldman Sachs, the CEO suggested that the existing pricing model in the U.S. may not be suitable for the German audience. He emphasized, "Our quality provides us the opportunity to adjust prices upward," highlighting a belief that the current subscription rates are too low. Nonetheless, he noted that there is no rush to implement these changes.

At present, HBO Max is not accessible in Germany. To gauge potential pricing, one can look at the subscription rates in the U.S. where the service operates at various tiers: a $10 per month plan with advertisements, a standard option at $17, and a premium tier priced at $21. The CEO's comments suggest that he views these figures as insufficient.

As for the launch strategy, it remains unclear whether HBO Max will debut in Germany with higher prices right away or if the company will offer initial discounts to attract subscribers. Warner Bros. executive Matthias Heinze recently expressed optimism regarding the service's introduction, noting that the increasing number of streaming subscriptions per household in Germany presents an opportunity for growth.

Warner Bros. has a history of producing acclaimed series such as "Game of Thrones," "Westworld," and more recently, "The Last of Us." Previously, many of these titles were accessible to German audiences through Sky or its streaming service, Wow. However, there are indications that Warner Bros. may not renew its partnership with Sky as it launches HBO Max. Heinze pointed out that due to Sky's strong focus on sports content, certain target audiences have not been reached. The aim is to create a platform that offers all content seamlessly.

As the launch date approaches, industry observers are keen to see how HBO Max will position itself in the competitive German streaming landscape and whether it will adopt a pricing strategy that reflects its premium content offerings.
