WHO Advises Monitoring of All Passengers Following Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified all individuals aboard a cruise vessel experiencing a hantavirus outbreak as high-risk contacts, recommending thorough monitoring for a 42-day period. The ship, MV Hondius, carrying close to 150 people, has been linked to the deaths of three passengers and several confirmed and suspected cases of the rare viral infection.

The vessel is currently en route to the waters near Tenerife in the Canary Islands. According to WHO's epidemic preparedness authorities, no new symptoms have been reported among passengers or crew. Nonetheless, the organization has emphasized the importance of proactive surveillance and follow-up for everyone on board, extending through the recommended 42-day window after their last potential exposure.

Hantavirus infections are uncommon, with transmission typically occurring through contact with infected rodent excretions. However, the strain identified in this outbreak is the Andes virus, the only hantavirus type known to be transmissible from person to person. Six positive cases have been confirmed to be caused by this strain, intensifying international health concerns.

Despite these developments, the risk to the general population, including residents of the Canary Islands, is currently assessed as low. Health authorities are coordinating with affected countries to manage the disembarkation process safely and minimize the risk of further spread. Plans are underway to transport asymptomatic individuals to their home countries, while any passengers exhibiting symptoms are to be evacuated directly to the Netherlands for specialized medical care.

The WHO is collaborating closely with member states, including Spain and the Netherlands, as well as international health experts, to implement the safest strategies for containment and care. Countries with citizens on board have been informed about protocols for secure and respectful disembarkation. Some nations, such as the United States and Canada, are considering joint arrangements to facilitate the repatriation of their nationals.

All individuals leaving the ship will be subject to ongoing health monitoring for the full 42-day period. This duration is calculated from the last potential exposure to a confirmed or suspected hantavirus case, with monitoring already in progress. The aim is to promptly identify and respond to any emerging symptoms in order to prevent additional transmission events.

Hantavirus poses significant health risks and is associated with severe respiratory illness in humans. While outbreaks are rare, the Andes virus's capacity for human-to-human transmission necessitates heightened vigilance and rigorous public health measures. The current situation underscores the importance of international cooperation and rapid response in managing infectious disease threats aboard international vessels.
