Gipsy Kings: "Music Is a Natural Way of Life"

Hanka Rackwitz, previously recognized for her roles on German television programs such as 'mieten, kaufen, wohnen' and a contestant on a popular reality TV series, has embarked on a new chapter by taking ownership of a historic pub in the small village of Freist, Saxony-Anhalt. The village, home to approximately 270 residents, now sees the reopening of the longstanding 'Dorfkrug' under Rackwitz's management.
Rackwitz's transition from television to hospitality marks a significant personal and professional change. Known for her openness regarding past challenges with obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety, Rackwitz has chosen to invest in reviving a central social venue for the village. Her decision was influenced by an acquaintance who brought the vacant establishment to her attention. Upon her first visit, she was immediately captivated by the building's character and the potential to restore its role within the community.
The Dorfkrug, with its over 100-year history, comprises a traditional bar area, a large hall, a bowling alley, and an outdoor beer garden. Local officials and residents, including the village's mayor, expressed early support and encouragement for Rackwitz's plans, hoping to restore the pub as a focal point for community gatherings and events.
Although Rackwitz is originally from Dresden and currently resides in Munich, she has indicated intentions to make Freist her permanent home. Her vision for the Dorfkrug extends beyond that of a typical village pub. Plans include hosting themed evenings such as karaoke and bingo, as well as organizing Sunday brunch events that encourage social interaction and community participation. The overarching aim is to create a welcoming space where residents and visitors alike can enjoy a variety of activities and locally inspired cuisine.
In the process of preparing the Dorfkrug for reopening, Rackwitz has received assistance from Pierre, a former partner who now plays a significant role as a business collaborator. Together, they have undertaken extensive renovations and logistical preparations necessary to relaunch the establishment. Their collaborative efforts reflect a shared commitment to both the business and the broader community.
The culinary approach at the new Dorfkrug diverges from conventional pub fare, with a focus on homemade dishes crafted from regional ingredients. Menu offerings reported by regional media include creative options such as beetroot carpaccio with caramelized apple and horseradish foam, chili cheeseburgers with varying levels of spiciness, and accompaniments like long fries and coleslaw. This modernized menu is designed to appeal to a diverse clientele, balancing tradition with contemporary tastes.
The pub officially reopened its doors on a recent Sunday, welcoming approximately 40 guests for the inaugural event. Feedback from attendees and local residents has been positive, with many expressing appreciation for the revival of a central gathering place. Looking ahead, Rackwitz aims for the Dorfkrug to become an integral part of Freist's social fabric, especially in anticipation of the upcoming village festival scheduled for September.
The reopening of the Dorfkrug under Rackwitz's stewardship represents a notable example of a public figure leveraging personal experience and public support to contribute to rural community development. By emphasizing local engagement, fresh culinary concepts, and a diverse program of events, the initiative aims to strengthen social ties and foster a renewed sense of community in Freist.
