Authorities in Istanbul are continuing their investigation into the deaths of a family from Hamburg who were visiting Turkey. The case has attracted significant attention as officials work to determine the cause of death for the parents and two young children, all of whom died during their stay in the city.
The mother and her two young children passed away last week, followed by the father's death in a local hospital. Initial reports from investigators suggest the possibility of food poisoning, but alternative theories involving chemical exposure are also being examined. It has been reported that chemicals used for pest control may have been applied in the family's hotel room, prompting a broader investigation into environmental factors.
Authorities are awaiting the results of toxicological tests and forensic examinations to clarify the circumstances. Early autopsy reports on the mother and children did not yield conclusive findings regarding the cause of death, leaving investigators to consider multiple scenarios.
In connection with the case, local police have detained eleven individuals, with formal arrest warrants issued for four suspects. Those facing charges include food vendors who sold the family sweet treats, stuffed mussels, and a traditional Turkish dish known as kokorec, as well as a café owner. The charges relate to suspected negligent homicide, as the family had reportedly consumed food from these sources prior to falling ill.
The hotel where the family was staying has also come under scrutiny after two additional guests reported symptoms of nausea and vomiting. According to authorities, one room in the hotel had recently been treated with chemical disinfectants. As a precaution, the establishment has been evacuated and sealed off, while a nearby restaurant in the Besiktas district has been temporarily closed by local officials.
The Hamburg family had arrived in Istanbul over a week prior to the incident. Reports indicate that they first sought medical attention for nausea and vomiting and were initially released from the hospital. However, their condition later worsened, leading to a second hospital admission, after which the children and subsequently the mother died. The father succumbed to his illness a few days later despite ongoing medical care.
Investigators continue to explore all possible sources of poisoning, including contaminated food and environmental hazards. The results of toxicological analyses and forensic assessments are expected to provide more definitive answers in the coming days. Turkish authorities have emphasized that all potential factors are being thoroughly examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
