Hamas Releases German-Israeli Hostage to Red Cross

Thu 30th Jan, 2025

In a significant development in the ongoing conflict, Hamas has released German-Israeli Arbel Yehud to the Red Cross in the Gaza Strip. This transfer was confirmed by Israeli television and later acknowledged by the Red Cross. The handover took place amid chaotic scenes, with large crowds gathering at the designated location in Khan Younis, where numerous masked armed individuals were also present.

At the time of the release, there was uncertainty surrounding the whereabouts of another German-Israeli hostage, 80-year-old Gadi Moses, who was also expected to be released today.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli Defense Forces reported the release of Israeli soldier Agam Berger in northern Gaza. Multiple news agencies corroborated this event, stating that the handover occurred in Jabalia, where the 20-year-old soldier was presented to the Red Cross by masked gunmen on a stage, prior to being allowed to wave to the crowd.

Following her release, the Israeli Army transported Berger to Israel, where she will undergo a medical examination before reuniting with her family. Berger had been taken captive during the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, alongside four other female soldiers, who were released on the previous Saturday.

On this Thursday, a total of eight hostages are expected to be released as part of a ceasefire agreement: in addition to Berger, two German-Israelis and five Thai nationals are included. The released individuals will first be taken to a military facility at the edge of the Gaza Strip before being transported to various hospitals across Israel. In exchange, 110 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails are set to be released.

The ceasefire agreement, which came into effect on January 19, aims for the release of 33 Israeli hostages over six weeks in return for the release of 1,904 Palestinian prisoners. In previous weeks, three civilian women and four soldiers have already been freed. An additional three hostages are scheduled for release on Saturday.

This ongoing situation highlights the complexities of the conflict and the humanitarian issues surrounding hostage situations in the region. As the negotiations continue, the focus remains on the safety and well-being of the hostages involved and the broader implications for peace in the area.
