Wildfires in Greece: Situation Under Control but Risks Remain High

Sun 10th Aug, 2025

Greece continues to battle wildfires across various regions, with firefighters managing to bring many blazes under control. However, the risk of further fires remains alarmingly high, particularly around the capital city of Athens and the island of Euboea.

Over the weekend, firefighting teams in Greece made significant progress in combating the flames. Despite this, the ongoing dry conditions coupled with strong winds have led authorities to issue warnings about the persistent fire hazards. The southeastern region near Athens has been especially hard hit, with reports indicating that nearly 1,600 hectares of agricultural land and forested areas have been scorched.

In response to the threats posed by the wildfires, several villages have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. Approximately 400 individuals have been rescued from perilous situations. Tragically, one individual lost their life on Friday when their remote home was engulfed by the advancing flames.

The wildfires have resulted in the destruction of dozens of homes and the loss of numerous animals. Additional incidents of fires were reported on the Peloponnese peninsula, in the northeastern parts of the country, and on the island of Samothraki. According to local media reports, the situation in these areas has largely been brought under control.

Authorities are currently investigating the causes of these fires. In a town close to Athens, local officials suspect arson, as a gas canister was discovered at the scene, along with reports of a suspicious individual riding a motorcycle. Furthermore, police and fire department investigations have revealed that one of the blazes in southeastern Athens may have been triggered by a faulty electrical cable. Two technicians from the state utility company, HEDNO, have reportedly been detained as part of the investigation, as they are believed to have failed to maintain the electrical line that caused the fire.

Given the current weather conditions, fire departments and civil protection agencies have emphasized that the risk of new fires remains exceptionally elevated, particularly in the Athens region and on Euboea. The situation continues to be monitored closely as efforts to control and extinguish the remaining fires persist.
