Wildfires Rage Near Athens, Resulting in Fatalities and Evacuations

Firefighting efforts are underway in Greece as wildfires continue to threaten areas near the capital city of Athens. The blaze, which ignited on Friday in the rural community of Keratea, has already claimed the lives of three individuals, prompting local authorities to take urgent action.

As of Saturday, more than 260 firefighters are battling the flames, which are being fueled by strong winds reaching speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour). The fire has not only resulted in loss of life but has also led to the destruction of homes and farmland, particularly affecting local olive orchards. Greece's national weather service has warned of continued strong winds, with gusts forecasted to reach 74 kilometers per hour (46 miles per hour) on Saturday. In a related incident, strong winds on the Cycladic island of Milos led to the tragic deaths of two Vietnamese tourists. While visiting a unique volcanic beach, a 61-year-old woman fell into the sea, prompting a rescue attempt by a 65-year-old man, who also lost his life in the effort.

Severe weather has disrupted ferry services for thousands of holidaymakers, although the temporary ban on maritime travel in and out of Athens ports was lifted on Saturday.

Neighboring Turkey is also grappling with wildfires, resulting in the temporary closure of the Dardanelles Strait, a vital waterway connecting the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Hundreds of residents in Turkey's Canakkale province have been evacuated as wildfires threaten nearby communities.

The Mediterranean region, including Greece and Turkey, is known for its hot and dry summers, creating an environment conducive to wildfires. This summer has been particularly severe, with record temperatures, such as the 50.5 degrees Celsius (123 degrees Fahrenheit) reported in Silopi, Turkey, marking the highest temperature recorded in the country.
