In a significant development for ChromeOS, Google has announced a collaboration with Lenovo to introduce the latest Chromebook Plus model, which is powered by a MediaTek ARM chip. This new laptop is designed to enhance the capability to perform AI tasks directly on the device.
The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is described as a cloud-centric notebook featuring an OLED display, touted to host the most advanced AI functionalities ever seen on a Chromebook. Rather than relying on Intel, AMD, or Qualcomm processors, this model incorporates MediaTek's Kompanio Ultra processor, which was first introduced in April 2025.
Google has outlined exclusive on-device AI features that will initially be available on the Lenovo Chromebook Plus. Among these features is a function known as "Intelligent Grouping," which organizes open tabs and documents into logical clusters based on current tasks. This aims to facilitate the management of multiple projects effortlessly.
Additionally, the Chromebook's gallery app will integrate AI capabilities, allowing users to edit images more conveniently. One-click background removal and the ability to create stickers from personal photos are among the features, though the latter will require an internet connection.
AI Features for All Chromebook Plus ModelsBeyond the exclusive features for Lenovo's Chromebook, Google has announced new functionalities that will be accessible across all Chromebook Plus devices. These enhancements will be integrated directly into ChromeOS.
One of the key upgrades is the introduction of a "Select to Search" feature, which is part of Google Lens. This will allow users to select an object on a webpage or video and search for it online with a simple long press on the launcher or through the screenshot tool.
Furthermore, ChromeOS will incorporate a text extraction feature enabling users to pull information directly from images without manual typing. Google has cited examples such as receipts and recipes that can be effortlessly converted into text.
A new "Quick Insert" key, which will be part of Lenovo's Chromebook, is designed for rapid creation and insertion of high-resolution AI-generated images and emojis, thereby enhancing documents and presentations.
Another innovative addition is the "Create an Overview for Me" function, which summarizes complex texts. A "Simplify" button will allow users to transform complicated phrasing into more straightforward language, making dense text more digestible.
Introducing Gemini AI ProAmong other advancements, Google has introduced a shortcut to NotebookLM in the taskbar, along with various Gemini functionalities integrated into Gmail, Docs, and other Google services. Accessing these features will require a Google AI Pro account, which is complimentary for the first twelve months with the purchase of a Chromebook Plus device.
Additionally, the popular Netflix game "Squid Game: Unleashed" has been optimized for larger screens, allowing users to engage with the game using a keyboard and mouse, complete with exclusive in-game items. The AI-based photo editing software "Luminar" has also been adapted for Chromebooks, and users will receive a three-month complimentary access upon purchasing a Chromebook Plus.
Specifications of the Lenovo Chromebook 14 PlusFurther details about the hardware reveal that the Lenovo Chromebook 14 Plus features a 14-inch OLED display with a Full HD resolution of 1920 × 1200 pixels. The MediaTek Kompanio Ultra 910 chip is manufactured using a 3nm process at TSMC and includes an ARM Cortex-X925 core, operating at frequencies up to 3.62 GHz, alongside three Cortex-X4 and four Cortex-A720 cores.
This new octa-core chip enables a range of AI functionalities to be executed directly on the Lenovo Chromebook. The processor includes a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of achieving performance up to 50 TOPS, exceeding the 40 TOPS minimum requirement set by Microsoft for its Copilot Plus PCs. In comparison, Qualcomm's existing elite ARM processors reach up to 45 TOPS.
The device offers options for either 12 or 16 GB of DDR5X RAM, and storage choices between 128 and 256 GB SSDs. Connectivity features include WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, along with Dolby Atmos sound support. It also includes a five-megapixel webcam with a privacy shutter, and a 60-Wh battery providing up to 17 hours of use.
The Lenovo Chromebook Plus is priced starting at EUR650 and is available for order immediately.
