Google's Gemini Aims to Handle Calls and Offer Proactive Assistance

Google is advancing its Gemini AI assistant through the innovative Project Astra, which focuses on enhancing the functionality of the assistant. Future iterations of Gemini are expected to autonomously manage phone calls and assist users in various tasks, such as inquiring about bicycle parts from local retailers.

During the recent Google I/O event, the tech giant showcased a glimpse of Gemini's potential capabilities, which range from aiding in bicycle repairs to supporting online shopping and providing tutoring for students. The introduction of Project Astra at the 2024 I/O laid the groundwork for a universal AI assistant that can seamlessly integrate into everyday tasks.

The current version of Gemini already incorporates some features demonstrated in Project Astra, including real-time access to the camera and screen content. For example, users can direct their smartphone camera at a clogged drain or a malfunctioning turntable, and Gemini can offer solutions to the problems identified. This capability is enhanced by Gemini's memory function, which allows it to recall previous interactions with users--a critical aspect for providing personalized assistance.

At the Google I/O, additional functionalities proposed for Astra were unveiled, emphasizing the importance of natural language comprehension and proactive agent features. Proactive assistance means that Gemini can alert users to potential tasks they may not have considered, which relies heavily on its memory capabilities.

One demonstration involved a user seeking help with a bicycle repair. The assistant was able to navigate a PDF manual to locate specific sections, such as the brakes chapter, based on user prompts. Furthermore, Gemini has the ability to search for instructional videos on platforms like YouTube in response to verbal queries.

In a significant enhancement, the assistant is designed to make calls on behalf of users. For instance, it can contact a bicycle shop to inquire about specific spare parts, effectively managing task delegation through AI agents. By utilizing the smartphone camera, it can also assist in identifying the correct hardware, such as a screw nut, in a well-organized workshop.

Another illustrative scenario depicted how Gemini can facilitate learning for students. In this example, a student captures a screenshot of a challenging chemistry problem and asks Gemini for assistance. The AI walks through the problem step-by-step and identifies mistakes by highlighting errors directly on the smartphone screen.

Google's vision for Gemini is to create a comprehensive assistant that can handle a variety of tasks, including research and phone calls, in diverse areas of life. Although similar functionalities were previously showcased with Google's Duplex technology, the company has opted not to reference it explicitly in this context. Duplex will still be integrated into a new feature called 'Ask for me', launching in early 2025 in the United States, which allows users to automate appointment scheduling.

While the scenarios presented by Google show promising prospects for easing daily activities, the timeline for implementing these features in Gemini remains uncertain. Ensuring effective functionality will require the assistant to have access to a wide array of user data, raising privacy concerns and necessitating trust from users towards the company. Google is working on processing data locally on devices, but the current capabilities for on-device AI tasks are still limited.
