Global Solar Expansion Thrives: Germany Ranked Among the Top 5

Wed 7th May, 2025

The transformation of Germany's energy landscape continues to progress significantly, with expectations for ongoing growth in the solar sector this year, according to the German Solar Industry Association (BSW). As the global demand for solar energy rises, Germany maintains a strong position among the leading countries in solar installation.

Ahead of the Intersolar trade fair in Munich, the BSW highlighted that worldwide installations of new solar power systems could exceed 600 gigawatts this year, roughly double the capacity added in 2022. This surge in solar energy generation reflects a broader trend towards renewable energy adoption globally.

In terms of installed solar capacity, Germany ranked fourth internationally last year, boasting over 100 gigawatts. This places the country behind China, the United States, and India, which have significantly larger land areas but are also competing in the renewable energy space. The German solar market saw a robust increase of approximately 14 percent in 2022, equivalent to an additional 17.5 gigawatts of solar power capacity installed.

The BSW plans to provide a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the solar industry later today, offering insights into the factors driving this growth and the future outlook for solar energy in Germany and beyond.

As countries continue to grapple with climate change and the transition to sustainable energy sources, Germany's advancements in solar technology and infrastructure position it as a key player in the global energy transition.
