Trump's Tariff War: China Urges Immediate Repeal of Tariffs Amid Countermeasures

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an alarming statistic reveals that approximately 260,000 women worldwide died in 2023 due to complications before, during, and shortly after childbirth. This translates to a staggering loss of one woman every two minutes. The WHO released these figures in conjunction with World Health Day on April 7, emphasizing the preventable nature of many of these deaths.
In nations with low-income levels, the maternal mortality rate is approximately 346 deaths per 100,000 live births, contrasting sharply with just around ten deaths per 100,000 live births reported in high-income countries. Common causes of maternal fatalities include severe postpartum hemorrhage and infections, which are often manageable with proper healthcare access.
Despite a significant decline in maternal mortality rates by 40% over the past 25 years due to improved prenatal care and medical advancements, the WHO warns that recent setbacks in humanitarian support for poorer regions may reverse these gains.
Particularly concerning is the situation in Nigeria, where the WHO noted that around 75,000 women died in 2023 due to childbirth-related complications. Other countries with high maternal mortality figures include India, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Pakistan, which collectively account for nearly half of all global maternal deaths. In contrast, Europe registered only 450 maternal deaths in the same year, marking it as a region with notably low maternal mortality rates.
The WHO has also identified a troubling trend in the United States, where maternal mortality rates, previously among the lowest, are now on the rise. Efforts to reduce maternal deaths in Latin America have seen minimal progress in recent years, according to the organization.
Additionally, the WHO highlights the connection between unsafe abortion practices and maternal mortality. To mitigate such risks, it is crucial to prevent unintended pregnancies. Access to contraceptives, safe abortion services where legal, and high-quality post-abortion care are essential for reducing maternal deaths.
The topic of abortion remains contentious in various regions, particularly in the United States, where recent legislative measures have significantly restricted access to safe abortion services. This political climate poses additional challenges to maternal health initiatives.
Despite ongoing efforts, the WHO's goal of reducing global maternal mortality to below 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030 appears increasingly unattainable, especially as progress has stagnated since 2016.
