Amusement parks are often associated with thrilling roller coasters, but the industry encompasses a broad spectrum of attractions and is experiencing significant global expansion. Despite a worldwide economic slowdown, amusement parks are optimistic about their growth prospects.
Jakob Wahl, the CEO of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), expressed confidence in the sector's resilience during a recent meeting held at Europa-Park, located north of Freiburg. He forecasts steady growth for the years 2025 and 2026, attributing this optimism to ongoing investments in new attractions and a rising demand from visitors.
Last year, the global revenue for amusement and theme parks was estimated to be between $60 and $65 billion (approximately EUR53 to EUR57 billion). Although major economic forecasts, including those from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), suggest a gloomy outlook due to geopolitical tensions and trade policies, the amusement park industry remains steadfast.
Wahl highlighted the burgeoning tourism sectors in the Gulf States, where significant developments are underway, such as the SeaWorld marine-themed park in Abu Dhabi. In Asia, there are expansions planned for parks in Japan and South Korea, along with substantial investments in China, including the new Legoland Shanghai.
In Europe, prominent players in the amusement park industry include Efteling in the Netherlands, PortAventura World in Spain, Disneyland near Paris, and Europa-Park in Germany. Europa-Park alone attracts over six million visitors annually, underscoring the region's vibrant and stable position within the global market.
Wahl concluded that Europe remains a dynamic component of the international amusement park industry, with continued investment and innovation poised to drive future growth.
