Germany wins first Chess Olympiad medal in 26 years

The German national chess team has achieved a significant milestone by securing a bronze medal at the Chess Olympiad held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. This marks Germany's first medal at the prestigious chess team event in 26 years. The German team, led by top player Vincent Keymer, managed the feat by defeating the Netherlands with a score of 2.5 to 1.5 in the final round.

Usbekistan clinched the gold medal, while silver went to India. The victory for Germany came as a surprise to many, as they were considered an unlikely contender for a top-three finish before the tournament began.

The German team's path to the podium included memorable performances, particularly from Vincent Keymer and Matthias Blübaum. In a crucial final match against the Netherlands, Blübaum secured a win against Jorden van Foreest. Keymer, along with Frederik and Rasmus Svane, contributed to the decisive 2.5-1.5 victory with their draws, solidifying Germany’s hold on third place. Frederik Svane expressed his joy about the team's success, stating, "I'm so happy" and found it difficult to fully believe their accomplishment.

The last time Germany medaled at a Chess Olympiad was in 2000 in Istanbul, where the team won silver. This was during an era when the team included renowned players such as Grandmaster Robert Hübner.

Throughout the tournament in Samarkand, the German team had impressive victories, including one against the home favourites, Uzbekistan. The German victory temporarily sparked hopes for a greater triumph. However, a subsequent loss to India, a formidable team led by world champion Dommaraju Gukesh, halted their momentum.

Uzbekistan entered the tournament as a previous winner and a strong contender, eventually living up to expectations by winning the gold. Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov expressed his pride in the victory, calling it the "proudest moment of my life." His young teammate, Javohir Sindarov, aged just 20, also played a vital role and celebrated winning his second Olympiad before turning 21. Sindarov is also set to challenge Gukesh for the world championship title later this year.

In the women's category of the Olympiad, China emerged victorious, led by Grandmaster Zhu Jiner, with Kazakhstan and India taking the silver and bronze positions, respectively. The German women's team, despite a strong effort led by International Master Dinara Wagner, did not manage to secure a medal.

On the sidelines of the Olympiad, a significant development included the election of a new president for the World Chess Federation. The position was won by Timur Turlov, a billionaire who has faced sanctions from Ukraine. This election is expected to influence future chess governance significantly.
