Thunderstorms Return Across Germany Followed by Brief Cool Spell

Germany is set to experience renewed thunderstorms and heavy rain, followed by a short period of cooler temperatures before another heatwave is anticipated. According to the German Meteorological Service (DWD), several regions are at risk of severe weather, particularly during the afternoon hours.

Weather models indicate that thunderstorms with the potential for severe conditions will affect the eastern, northwestern, and southern parts of the country. In these areas, strong winds, heavy rainfall, and lightning are likely, while the southern region faces a heightened risk of gale-force to hurricane-strength gusts.

Saturday is expected to bring further storms, especially in southern and eastern Germany. However, as the weekend progresses, storm activity should decrease, with only the Alpine foothills experiencing lingering unsettled conditions by Sunday. During this period, temperatures are forecast to drop, with the 30-degree Celsius mark only being reached in southern areas. Northern Germany will see daytime highs often below 25 degrees Celsius, and nighttime lows could fall into the single digits.

Much of Saturday will be characterized by abundant sunshine and dry weather, except for intervals of thicker cloud cover in the southern and eastern regions. On Sunday, temperatures will rebound in southwestern Germany, with highs potentially reaching up to 34 degrees Celsius along the Upper Rhine. Elsewhere, northern areas can expect values between 21 and 26 degrees, while other parts of the country will experience temperatures ranging from 25 to 33 degrees. Extended periods of sunshine are likely across most regions.

Looking ahead to the following week, the DWD forecasts a return of hot air masses, leading to maximum temperatures between 30 and 38 degrees Celsius in many parts of Germany. This resurgence in heat will also increase the likelihood of severe thunderstorms once again, particularly during the afternoons.

The week is expected to start with widespread sunshine on Monday. Northern regions may see some cloud cover, but overall, dry conditions will prevail. However, isolated and potentially intense thunderstorms are possible, especially over the southern half of the country. Temperatures on Monday are projected to reach between 26 and 31 degrees Celsius in the north, with southern and central areas seeing highs from 31 up to 38 degrees.

The DWD advises the public to remain vigilant for rapidly changing weather conditions, particularly in areas prone to severe thunderstorms. Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and take necessary precautions during periods of extreme weather, especially as the risk of heatwaves and violent storms is expected to persist throughout the week.
