The shift towards renewable energy continues to gain momentum in Germany, as the number of registered solar power installations has now exceeded five million. According to the Federal Network Agency, there are currently approximately 5,005,000 solar systems operational across the country. This milestone is celebrated as a significant achievement in the country's energy transition efforts.
The Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft (BSW-Solar), a leading industry association, has highlighted that solar power is now the most popular form of electricity generation among the German population. It is estimated that around 104 gigawatts of solar energy capacity has been installed, with nearly 38% of this capacity located on residential rooftops, 29% on commercial buildings, 32% on open fields, and nearly 1% on balconies.
In the past year alone, about 17 gigawatts of new solar capacity were added, which is equivalent to the output of 104 large coal-fired power plants. Currently, solar installations account for approximately 15% of the country's total electricity consumption.
BSW-Solar's CEO emphasized the crucial role of the Renewable Energy Sources Act, which was enacted 25 years ago, serving as a catalyst for the solar energy sector's growth. This legislation transformed solar technology from a costly satellite technology into one of the most affordable sources of electricity globally. The transition has empowered consumers, turning them into 'prosumers' who generate their own energy.
The majority of the five million installations consist of building-integrated systems, with over 4.1 million active installations providing a total output of around 71 gigawatts. Balcony power plants, despite their smaller size, have recorded approximately 870,000 installations, contributing about 0.8 gigawatts of energy.
While only around 19,000 ground-mounted solar farms are registered, they represent a substantial capacity of 31.5 gigawatts. Additional installations have been noted on large parking lots and bodies of water, contributing minimally to the overall capacity.
The swift rise in new installations has been bolstered by the recent surge in affordable balcony solar systems, with more than half a million units activated since early 2024. These systems are particularly popular among renters and property owners in urban settings, while homeowners tend to opt for larger rooftop installations. With the season for these systems typically beginning in spring, over 81,000 new balcony installations have already been reported this year, although there may be more unregistered systems coming to light due to registration delays.
The growth trajectory for balcony solar systems indicates that they could soon reach nearly a million installations, especially if the trend continues in the upcoming quarters. Experts forecast that this milestone could be achieved as early as summer, spurred by the systems' low installation costs and improved legal frameworks that have facilitated their uptake.
Germany has around 30 million apartments in multi-family homes, suggesting there remains significant untapped potential for solar energy production across the nation. This ongoing transition to renewable energy resources marks a critical step in Germany's commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.
